LEADERSHIP REQUIRES VISION

by Sidney Siller Sr., PDC, Department Adjutant

The ongoing debate among Americans involving the clashing philosophies of evolution and intelligent design rages on. As interesting as the arguments are, it is not going to be the subject of this column. Ever! But visionary plans and ideas most certainly will.

The last of all the great highways; airports; tunnels; and world fairs in the metropolitan New York area were all conceived; planned; built; and orchestrated by Robert Moses. There are to my knowledge, no plans in the works for additional bridges; airports; tunnels; and roads. The explosion of the population in the New York region 50-100 years from now will no doubt be saddled with inability issues as a result of our inability to build on Robert Moses's success. We do not have any public leaders with a vision to project. Robert Moses lord knows, was far from being beautiful, but he could envision what future generations needed in the times to come.

So how does that relate to the Department of New York - DAV? It does in this way. The leaders of our Department see the need to plan Assisted Living Facilities on VAMC sites for senior disabled American veterans where feasible. We believe that there is a strong need to develop a facility for those who need minimal care and do not need to be in a nursing home.

The Department of New York is trying to develop this concept of caring and assisting our members, with their wife or "significant other," in an atmosphere that will be fraternal and where the residents will not have to give up their humble life savings.

Former VA Secretary, Anthony Principe, and several VAMC Directors have voiced their enthusiastic support of this vision.

As time progresses, you will certainly hear more from this corner. It will not be easy, but what worthwhile is?

With "20-20" eyesight - good vision is great. Especially, when with the leaders in DAV-NY that we are fortunate to have. So, Robert Moses move over. Keep tuned!
