VIETNAM PHOTO EXHIBIT IN ALBANY
Nicola L. Luciani, Department Commander

George P. Basher, Director of The New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs has announced that the DVA and the Vietnam Memorial will present, "Vietnam Moves On In Beauty and Grace," a photo exhibit by Frank and Connie Houde.

This first time exhibit opens June 12, 2001 and continues through August 10, 2001, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A public reception to mark the opening was held on June 12th at the gallery.

Photographs in the exhibit document a return journey by the Houdes with other veterans, professors, students and children of veterans with the goal of healing the wounds of war and to experience what Vietnam had to offer an American visiting the country at this time. The display will feature photographs taken of revisited sites where the veterans were stationed, as well as scenes of the land and its people.

Houde, a career Air Force officer, served in Vietnam in 1968-69 as commander of Detachment 2, 556th Reconnaissance Sq. at Cam Ranh Bay. His air missions were mostly over the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the Gulf of Tonkin. He retired in 1974 after 20 years of military service.

The New York State Vietnam Memorial Gallery is located inside the entrance of the Justice Building on the State Street side of the Empire State Plaza in Albany. The Memorial was dedicated in 1984 as a "living Memorial" that commemorates the military service of New York State residents in Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia between 1961 and 1975.

Operated by Division of Veterans' Affairs, the Memorial features a courtyard honor roll in tribute to those New Yorkers killed or missing in action during the war and a resource room and library, in addition to the fine arts gallery.

The Memorial offers changing exhibits, educational and veteran outreach programs and special events and is the first such effort of this kind by any state in the nation. For more information call the Memorial's curator, Robert Allyn at (518) 473-5546.
