Scholarships to Surviving Family Members Means Free Education at SUNY or
CUNY Governor George E. Pataki announced on June 25 that he has directed the Board of Trustees at the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY) to immediately implement a new policy guaranteeing free college tuition to the children of New York State residents killed while serving in the military in the war on terror. Following September 11, Governor Pataki announced a similar policy at all SUNY and CUNY schools for the families of those who were killed or seriously and permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, or an equivalent amount of aid for students who attend private colleges in New York State. "New York and New Yorkers will never forget the sacrifices made by heros like Army Green Beret Sgt. 1st Class Peter Tycz," Governor Pataki said. "Having been victimized by the worst terrorist attack in history, New Yorkers have a special understanding of the importance of the war on terror, and we are deeply indebted to the brave men and women who are now fighting in defense of our freedoms and to ensure our national security. "The families of those New Yorkers who are killed in the line of duty should not have to worry about how they are going to pay for college tuition, and with this initiative, they will never have to. This commitment will ensure that the families of our heroes will receive our support not only today, but in five, ten, or 20 years, when they are ready to attend college." Under the new policy, the State will pay the cost of tuition at any SUNY or CUNY institution for the children and spouses of military and other US government personnel who are residents of New York lost while serving in the war on terror. Tuition is currently $3,400 per year at SUNY and $3,200 per year at CUNY. The Governor will also advance legislation to have the State pay for the cost of items beyond tuition, such as room and board, fees, books, supplies and transportation. The benefit will be available for four years of full-time undergraduate study (or five years for certain five year baccalaureate programs). The legislation will also provide an equivalent amount for those who choose to attend a private college or university in New York State. The current average cost of attendance at a SUNY four-year college is nearly $12,000 per year, including tuition, room & board, fees, books, supplies and transportation. The Governor's directive to SUNY and CUNY is effective immediately and will be in effect for the upcoming 2002-2003 academic year.
