A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS OF THE DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS DEPARTMENT OF NEW YORK Volume 11, Number 5, May 2002, PAGE 2 of 5
One of the DAV's top legislative priorities is legislation to make the claims and appeals process work for, not against, veterans. Judicial review has publicly exposed what veterans already knew - that VA often fails to apply laws beneficial to veterans and wrongfully denies many veterans' claims. However, the current appellate processes still do not permit veterans to easily and promptly obtain remedies for erroneous denials of benefits. Until the appellate procedures are corrected to make the process fair, efficient, and timely for veterans claimants will continue to be deprived of benefits they rightly deserve. For the DAV such a situation is unacceptable. In response to calls by the DAV and IB, Congressman Lane Evans (D-IL), with several original cosponsors, introduced H.R. 4018 to correct some of the most detrimental problems and impediments to justice in the current appellate process. As with any legislation that will greatly benefit veterans and have a major impact on their rights, passage of this bill will require and exceptionally strong and persistent grassroots campaign by the DAV, it's members, and other veterans' organization and their members. We need a groundswell of DAV grassroots action. We urge and DAV department, DAV chapter and DAV member to make passage of H.R. 4018 a major goal. Write, call, or visit your member of Congress to urge him or her to cosponsor and actively work for passage of this legislation. On our DAV web site at www.dav.org, we have a prepared e-mail message for House members on this issue. Let Congress know that this is a DAV priority; let your member of Congress know that you want to see him or her cosponsor and actively support passage of this very important legislation.
